Senior DevOps Engineer

EXL Digital is seeking an experienced Senior DevOps Engineer with 8+ years of expertise in designing, automating, and operating scalable cloud infrastructure on AWS. In this role, you'll own CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, container orchestration, observability, and production reliability for enterprise-grade applications. The ideal candidate is a hands-on automation enthusiast who thrives on eliminating toil, hardening security, and partnering with engineering teams to ship faster and more reliably.

Description

EXL Digital is looking for an experienced Senior DevOps Engineer to join our team. At EXL, we believe there is always a better way. We look deeper, we find it, and we make it happen. We've built a culture founded on core values of innovation, collaboration, excellence, integrity, and respect.

In this role, you will design, build, and maintain the infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and operational tooling that power our applications across AWS. You'll work closely with backend, frontend, and data engineering teams to automate the software delivery lifecycle, improve system reliability, strengthen security posture, and enable developers to ship with confidence. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving infrastructure challenges at scale, championing DevOps best practices, and continuously raising the bar on automation and observability.

Responsibilities

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will:

  • Design, implement, and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or AWS CodePipeline to enable fast, safe, and repeatable deployments.

  • Build and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS (EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, VPC, IAM, CloudFront, Route 53, etc.) following well-architected principles.

  • Define and manage infrastructure as code using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or similar tools.

  • Containerize applications using Docker and orchestrate workloads with Kubernetes (EKS) or ECS.

  • Establish and maintain observability across systems — logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and alerting — using tools like CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch, Datadog, or New Relic.

  • Drive site reliability practices including SLO/SLI definition, incident response, root-cause analysis, and post-mortem culture.

  • Automate operational tasks using scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or Go to eliminate toil and improve team velocity.

  • Implement and enforce security best practices across the SDLC — secrets management, IAM least-privilege, vulnerability scanning, container image hardening, and compliance automation.

  • Partner with development teams to optimize build, test, and release workflows, and to support troubleshooting in production.

  • Manage configuration, secrets, and environments using tools such as AWS Secrets Manager, HashiCorp Vault, Ansible, or similar.

  • Plan and execute capacity, scalability, cost-optimization, and disaster-recovery strategies for cloud workloads.

  • Maintain high operational quality by establishing standards, runbooks, and automation patterns; mentor and uplift the broader engineering team on DevOps practices.

  • Evaluate and recommend new tools, platforms, and technologies; build POCs to validate fit before broader adoption.

  • Work in an Agile/DevOps environment to deliver enterprise-grade infrastructure and platform capabilities in iterative sprints.

  • Document architecture, runbooks, and best practices, and share knowledge across the team.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6 years of total experience in DevOps, Site Reliability, Cloud, or Infrastructure Engineering roles supporting enterprise applications.

  • Minimum 4+ years of hands-on experience designing and operating workloads on AWS (or a comparable cloud platform).

  • Strong, hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code using Terraform and/or CloudFormation.

  • Deep experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, AWS CodePipeline, or similar).

  • Strong experience with Docker and container orchestration using Kubernetes (preferably EKS) and/or ECS.

  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python, Bash, or Go.

  • Solid experience with monitoring, logging, and observability tooling (CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch, Datadog, New Relic, or similar).

  • Strong understanding of Linux systems administration, networking (VPCs, subnets, routing, DNS, load balancing), and security fundamentals.

  • Experience implementing security and compliance practices — IAM, secrets management, vulnerability scanning, image hardening, and policy-as-code.

  • Strong consideration for candidates with serverless experience on AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, EventBridge, etc.).

  • Strong consideration for candidates with experience supporting third-party integrations and hybrid environments.

  • Experience supporting databases in production (PostgreSQL, MySQL) — backups, replication, performance tuning, and failover.

  • Strong knowledge of SDLC, version control (Git), branching strategies, and release management.

  • Experience working in Agile/SCRUM environments with iterative delivery cycles.

  • Quick learner with the ability to understand a product's architecture end to end and contribute across the stack when needed.

  • Interest in exploring emerging tools and technologies; willingness to build POCs and evaluate them for production use.

  • Strong communication skills — both oral and written.

  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders across multiple geographies.

  • Excellent team player, with the ability to operate as an individual contributor when required.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree, preferably in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
